Ocala Ritz Veterans Village is on Silver Springs Boulevard in Ocala. The historic hotel was built in 1919 but has changed usage throughout the years. It has served as an apartment complex, hotel and troop barracks during World War II. Volunteers of America/Florida, a nonprofit, faith-based agency assumed management in 2011. Veterans Village offers transitional housing where homeless veterans can get a fresh start.
Pioneer Garden Club in conjunction of the Greater Ocala Woman's Club furnished and set up housekeeping, for the studio apartment for the Ritz Veteran's Project. The project was a labor of love for all the members of both clubs. We are happy to be a part of the wonderful program to support our veterans who give so much to protect the freedom of the American people. Pioneer Garden Club continues to help through volunteerism, donations of personal toiletries, and beautification of the property.
According to the South Marion Citizen, Veterans Need You!

"WEKIVA YOUTH CAMP is a residential nature camp for 3rd through 8th Grade youngsters sponsored by the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. (FFGC) for the purpose of instilling a love and respect for the REAL Florida in our youth through nature study, conservation and protection of our environment for the future of our state and our planet. Wekiva Youth Camp is accredited by the American Camp Association.
Wekiva Youth Camp is comprised of six one-week sessions during June & July in Wekiwa Springs State Park, where FFGC (a not-for-profit organization) partners with the Florida Parks Service to improve and maintain the facilities. Wekiva Youth Camp promises an unforgettable experience enjoying nature, crafts, and the beauty of the natural world in a magical, pristine setting. Campers should be interested in nature and like the outdoors. Florida residency is not required and campers are welcomed without regard to race, color, religion or ethnicity. Campers enjoy a unique outdoor living and learning experience, with close supervision. Our motto for our youth is “Campers Today – Environmental Leaders Tomorrow”.

"I visited SSSP (Silver Springs State Park) today. The gardens look good . . .
except they need us to help weed. (Yes, too hot, I know.) Everything is very
mature, growing like mad and in full bloom. The butterflies and bees were
all hard at work! It was great to see. I thought you would enjoy these pictures.

Adopt a Park Project by Pioneer Garden Club of Ocala. Silver Springs State Park used to be an amusement park, but roughly 266 acres were transmitted to the Florida State Park system in 2013. Many horticultural and community service clubs promised their help in the restoration of the amusement park to bring it back to the natural Florida landscape.
Each year, everyone can come to the park for National Public Lands Day. This year it is 22 September, 2018.
